What is the currency of India?
The official currency of India is the Indian Rupee, abbreviated as INR and symbolised as ₹. The ₹ symbol was introduced in 2010, blending the Devanagari letter "र" (ra) with a horizontal stroke from the Latin letter "R," representing India's fusion of tradition and modernity. One rupee divides into 100 paise, though paise coins are rarely used in everyday transactions today.
The rupee is named after the silver coin "rupiya," first issued in the 16th century by Sultan Sher Shah Suri. The name comes from the Sanskrit word "rūpya," meaning "wrought silver."
