All about South African currency
What is the currency of South Africa?
The official currency of South Africa is the South African Rand, abbreviated as ZAR and symbolised as R. One rand divides into 100 cents. The rand was introduced in 1961 when South Africa became a republic, replacing the South African Pound at a rate of 2 rand per pound.
The name "rand" comes from "Witwatersrand," meaning "ridge of white waters" in Afrikaans, which is the name of the gold-rich ridge on which Johannesburg was built. The discovery of gold in the Witwatersrand in 1886 triggered one of the largest gold rushes in history and shaped modern South Africa.

ZAR notes and coins
Banknotes: R10, R20, R50, R100, R200
Each banknote features one of the Big Five African animals: the R10 features the rhino, the R20 the elephant, the R50 the lion, the R100 the buffalo, and the R200 the leopard. Former President Nelson Mandela appears on the reverse of all five notes.
Coins: 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, R1, R2, R5
Note: the 1c and 2c coins were withdrawn from circulation in 2002.
Fun facts about South African banknotes
- South Africa's banknotes were redesigned in 2012 to feature Nelson Mandela's portrait following his 90th birthday. It was the first time in South African history that a living person appeared on the country's banknotes.
- Before the rand, South Africa used the rixdollar in the early colonial period, followed by the pound sterling from 1826. The rand replaced the pound in 1961 at South African independence.
- The Krugerrand gold coin, introduced in 1967, was the world's first gold bullion coin made available to private investors. It's still one of the most widely traded gold coins in the world and takes its name from President Paul Kruger.
- South Africa is the world's largest producer of platinum and one of the largest producers of gold, diamonds, and chromite, all resources reflected in the historical economic importance of its currency.
